Modernized Proverbs 31: 16 - 20
Continuing with Proverbs 31...
Verse 16
"She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands, she plants a vineyard."
She is a businesswoman that seizes the opportunity to purchase land and makes smart investments. Not only is this woman doing all the research to obtain the lands value, but she is the one who decides what gets planted and eventually harvested for the financial gain. She is an entrepreneur and knows the value of hard work.
Verse 17
"She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong."
Some variations actually say, "she girds her loins" which is a procedure where you prepare yourself to go into battle. This is a strong woman who is ready to face the challenges ahead with a strong spirit and great mental strength. She isn't afraid of hard work or responsibility. She builds herself in such a way that she is not becoming weaker but stronger.
Verse 18
"She perceives that her merchandise is profitable, her lamp does not go out at night."
This sister knows that value of the work or products she produces and that it is high quality and valuable. She has confidence in her abilities, skills and her effort. She works hard into the night to produce whatever she needs to so that she completes her business responsibilities. This is a woman who is diligent, persevering, and very committed. The symbolism of the candle could be that she provides the light to her household through her efforts and productivity even in dark times.
Verse 19
"She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands take hold of the spindle."
A spindle is a device that a woman would use to spin up raw materials into yarn or thread. We see yet again that this is a woman of many talents and is very capable of hard work. Moreso, she is in no way afraid of the hard work that is required of her. This is a capable, valuable and well-trained woman. The distaff was a part of the spindle that must be held with great strength so as to feed the raw material into the tool to keep it going smoothly. This symbolism means that she is skilled and efficient, a lady who takes the opportunity to turn nothing into something with great skill.
Verse 20
"She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy."
This is a woman who is involved with the community and provides for those who are less fortunate. Whether she's involved with the soup kitchen, a clothing closet in her church or working to help unwed mothers, she is reaching out to care for others in need. She is generous, compassionate, kind, and serves as an extension of the Lord's love.
